Uniform Requirements

ELLIS LOWER SCHOOL UNIFORM FOR KINDERGARTEN–GRADE 4

Students in kindergarten through grade 4 must wear the required school uniform in Ellis plaid. In the Lower School, shirts and complementary items must be white or hunter green. Outerwear jackets or coats and boots may not be worn in school and are only for outside activity.

JUMPER:

Plaid bib jumper to be worn with long or short sleeve white polo shirt. The plaid jumper may be worn daily; it is required for formal assemblies and some field trips.

SHIRT OPTIONS:

White or dark green polo shirt, blouse, or turtleneck:

• Polo shirt with collar and long or short sleeves
• Cotton blouse, plain-tailored with collar and long, roll, or short sleeves. If t-shirts are worn under blouses, they must be in uniform colors without lettering or design. Blouses must be buttoned up, not worn as overshirts.
• Turtleneck with long or short sleeves
• No collarless or sleeveless shirts
• Shirts displaying non-Ellis logos may not be worn.
• Shirts must not be revealing, tight-fitting, or expose the midriff. All shirts must cover the tops of pants, kilts, or skorts.
• Long-sleeve shirts under short-sleeve shirts must be the same color.

SOCKS AND LEGWEAR OPTIONS:

• Khaki pants may be worn with shirt options mentioned above. Students are not required to purchase a specific brand or style; however, they cannot wear khaki-colored leggings or jeans.
• Khaki Bermuda shorts may be worn with shirt options mentioned above August–October and April–June. Shorts should not have cargo pockets or rolled cuffs. Shorts fulfilling these requirements may be purchased through Pro3.
• Leggings may be worn under the uniform, but they must be solid black.
• Solid white short or knee socks
• White athletic or golf socks
• No peds or patterned socks

SHOES:

• Lower School students wear tennis shoes that they can independently remove and put on so that they are safe for participating in all school activities, including PE and playing on the playground.
• If students wear boots to school, they must bring tennis shoes to be worn while indoors.

OPTIONAL UNIFORM ITEMS

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (KINDERGARTEN–GRADE 4) / DANCE UNIFORM (GRADES 3 AND 4) ITEMS

On days that students have physical education (PE) or dance classes, they should come to school wearing clothing as indicated in the chart below:

ELLIS MIDDLE SCHOOL UNIFORM

Students in grades 5 through 8 must wear the required school uniform in Ellis plaid. In the Middle School, shirts and complementary items must be white or hunter green. Outerwear jackets or coats may not be worn during the school day.

KILT / SKORT:

• Plaid
• Kilts are to be no shorter than 4” above the top of the kneecap.
• The kilt may not be decorated in any way.
• Shorts may be worn under kilts but must not show beneath the hem.

KHAKI PANTS:

• No cargo pockets
• No frayed hems

SHORTS:

• Khaki Bermuda shorts
• Shorts must have a 7” inseam.
• Shorts should not have cargo pockets or rolled cuffs.
• Shorts fulfilling these requirements may be purchased through Pro3.
• Shorts may be worn August–October and April–June.

SHIRT:

• White or dark green polo shirt (2-inch logo permitted) with collar and long or short sleeves
• White or dark green cotton blouse, plain-tailored with collar and long, roll, or short sleeves. If t-shirts are worn under blouses, they must be in uniform colors without lettering or design. Blouses must be buttoned up, not worn as overshirts.
• White or dark green turtleneck with long sleeves
• No collarless or sleeveless shirts
• Shirts displaying large non-Ellis logos (beyond 2 inches square) may not be worn.
• Shirts must not be revealing, tight-fitting, or expose the midriff, and they must cover the tops of pants, kilts, or skorts.
• Long-sleeve shirts under short-sleeve shirts must be the same color.

LEGWEAR:

• Solid white or dark green, knee or athletic socks
• Solid white, dark green, or black tights (with or without feet and to the ankle)
• Any color ankle socks

FOOTWEAR:

• Typical cross-training, running shoes, or Converse-style sneakers are permitted.
• Shoes should have firm support in the soles.
• Shoes must have laces.
• There are no restrictions related to colors, but shoes should be unadorned—no studs, wheels, lights, etc.

OPTIONAL MIDDLE SCHOOL UNIFORM ITEMS

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PE) / DANCE UNIFORM

Middle School students are required to change into a PE uniform for physical education classes. The PE / Dance uniform requirements for grades 5–8 are listed below.

ELLIS UPPER SCHOOL UNIFORM

Students in grades 9 to 12 must wear the required school uniform in Ellis plaid. Please see the list below for color options for shirts and complementary items in the Upper School. Ellis-branded and themed gear is considered part of the uniform, including athletic team gear, club/affinity group attire, etc.

KILT:

• Ellis plaid
• No shorter than 4” above the top of the kneecap
• The kilt may not be decorated in any way

SHIRT:

• White, dark green, navy, red, or black polo shirt, plain with long or short sleeves
• White, dark green, navy, red, or black blouse, plain-tailored with long, roll, or short sleeves. Blouses must be buttoned up, not worn as overshirts
• White, dark green, navy, red, or black turtleneck with long or short sleeves
• No collarless or sleeveless shirts
• Shirts and sweatshirts displaying large non-Ellis logos (beyond 2 inches square) may not be worn
• Shirts must not be revealing, tight-fitting, or expose the midriff, and must cover the tops of pants or kilts

LEGWEAR:

• Students must wear shorts, tights, or leggings under kilts
• Tights and/or leggings must be a solid color
• No flared leggings, pajama pants, or non-Ellis branded sweatpants

SHOES:

Upper School students need footwear that is appropriate for climbing stairs, working in labs and studios, walking outside, and walking on carpeted and tiled floor surfaces. Leather oxfords, loafers, slip-ons with a sturdy sole, clogs with backs, tennis shoes, or sports sneakers are best. Boots that are below the mid-calf length may be worn. No sandals, Crocs, flip-flops, slippers, open-toed, open-heeled, or high-heeled (more than 2 inches) shoes are permitted.

OPTIONAL UPPER SCHOOL UNIFORM ITEMS

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PE)

Upper School students are required to change into a PE uniform for physical education classes. Students in grade 9, Lifetime Wellness, are required to wear the PE uniform found on the Pro3 website. For units that require additional equipment, information will be sent home with students from the teacher.
